What Breaks Your Heart About the Industry | Your Questions, Day 7 of 30

What breaks your heart about the industry?

I hate how random it can feel. I have been lucky enough to surround myself with men and women who are so talented, work so hard, and still struggle so damn much. There is no reason they aren’t on a show or in a movie or showrunning or in rooms… None.

There are actors and actresses in your living rooms who have no right to be there; they aren’t good, they don’t work hard, they haven’t trained… and yet… There they are.

I hate how much emphasis there is on appearance, though (happily) that kind of stereotype is fading a little bit. A little.

But I think the thing, the one thing, that really gets to me is when you start to feel like you’ve done everything — you have the headshots, you’ve self-created your shows, you’ve done workshops, you’re in class, you try and try and try and…

Nowhere. Nothing. No one wants you.

That’s when it starts to really weigh heavily on me, that’s when my heart breaks; it’s when all those things converge and the little voice (that isn’t really all that little) starts to whisper:

Maybe you really just aren’t very good.

And then you start to believe it.
